Biography
Andreas F. Tillack earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, WA in August 2015. He also holds a M.Sc. (Diplom) in Physics from Humboldt-University Berlin, Germany. For his Ph.D. research, Andreas joined Prof. Bruce H. Robinson in the quest for understanding and improving organic non-linear electro-optical materials through advanced statistical mechanics theory. Towards this goal, he developed methods to systematically obtain coarse-grained representations of higher level force fields and electronic structure calculations that best match those underlying potentials. Prior to becoming a statistical mechanician, he worked with a broad range of experimental characterization techniques, from optical methods used on colloidal suspensions and single nanoparticles to X-ray and high-energy electron synchrotron spectroscopies. Andreas’ masters thesis involved the development and construction of a portable flow cytometer using the optical pickup unit of a commercial DVD burner. His research activities included numerous collaborations with research groups in chemistry, physics, and material sciences. Throughout his scientific career, Andreas’ now over twenty years of programming experience always facilitated his research goals. He is interested in applying his experience in theoretical and experimental science to develop new computational techniques specifically targeted at materials modeling.
