Overview

SC presents full- and half-day workshops with the goal of expanding the knowledge base of practitioners and researchers in a particular area of interest. Workshops provide a focused, in-depth venue for presentations, discussion, and interaction. Proposals are peer-reviewed and selected with a preference for submissions that inspire deep and interactive dialogue on important topics within the HPC community.

Reproducibility Initiative

We believe that reproducible science is essential, and that SC should be a leader in this effort. Reproducibility has already been well adopted within the SC Papers program, with about 40% of submissions and 50% of accepted papers containing a reproducibility appendix.

Moving in this direction, reproducibility will be considered during the evaluation of workshop submissions. Each workshop organizer should encourage submitters to include reproducibility information, using SC17 Technical Papers as a guide.

Encouraging Reproducibility

The Workshops submission form includes the following questions:

  • How do you plan on including reproducibility (e.g., “in the same way as SC17 Technical Papers”)?
  • If you are not including reproducibility in your workshop, why not?

If a workshop organizer believes they cannot partake in this initiative, they should explain why in their submission to the Workshops Committee.

Types of Workshops

There are generally three types of workshops at SC:

  1. Workshops centered around published technical papers
  2. Workshops centered around panelists and discussion (“mini-symposia”)
  3. Invited workshops for working groups, centered around already-published work

At SC17, more than 90% of the workshops were of the first type. The reproducibility initiative targets these workshops in particular; however, the Workshops Committee welcomes any movement toward reproducibility in submissions from the other two workshop types as well.

For Authors

Workshop organizers who intend to participate in the reproducibility initiative should provide for their authors:

  • Information about this initiative on the workshop’s website, explaining how authors can present their reproducibility documentation;
  • An evaluation of each author’s reproducibility documentation, as part of the review process;
  • And confirmation from their proceedings editors that the reproducibility information can be included in the proceedings.
