DescriptionExploring parallel programming at the undergraduate level is difficult due to the limited availability of hardware exposing sufficient parallelism. While increasing core counts in consumer hardware is helping to address this, core counts are still low, and system noise from desktop operating systems and background processes make performance measurement on student owned systems less than ideal. For short duration classes, the time needed on production clusters to establish student accounts and queue waits per job submission are significant barriers to use. This poster discusses MCSCN, a small educational cluster, built using effectively free hardware to address these challenges at a small liberal arts university.
