Abstract: The career panel will consist of representatives with a HPC background in industry and higher education. The panel will share advice on what different careers in the field look like after graduation. The primary audience for this event is current undergraduates, graduate students and post-docs. The panel will include representatives from industry and a broad array of higher education institutions. The format will feature a brief introduction by each speaker and then a moderated discussion with questions from the audience.
Long Description: The primary goal of this BOF is to share career paths for students in HPC. We want to create a diverse panel with representatives from R1 universities, liberal arts colleges, community colleges and industry. The audience for this event is current graduate students and post-docs in the field and we are collaborating with the doctoral showcase co-chairs Sanjukta Bhowmick and Kamesh Madduri to advertise this event to the participants of that event. We are planning on having a panel of 6-8 panelists and a moderator. A majority of the time will be spent on audience interaction. We have not formally invited our panelists since we are waiting for the BOF to be approved before doing so. We are looking at two liberal arts faculty (Prof. Dick Brown, St. Olaf College, Prof. John Dougherty, Haverford College), two community college faculty, two R1 faculty (from the TCHPC executive committee) and two industry representatives (likely from Bloomberg and Nvidia).
Our goals are to expose graduate students to diverse career paths, to enable them to build connections with faculty and industry representatives and to create a forum for free and frank discussion on tradeoffs between these different possible career paths. We want students to understand working in these positions looks like and to get some perspective on what search committees and industry interviewers look for.
This BOF is being organized by the TCHPC Educational Outreach Initiative. This BOF has not been held before.
