SUMMARY:The Human Side of Data Science
DESCRIPTION:Invited Talk\nTech Program Reg Pass, Exhibits Reg Pass\n\nThe
Human Side of Data Science\n\nAragon\n\nExtraordinary advances in our abil
ity to acquire and generate data are transforming the fundamental nature o
f discovery across domains. Much of the research in the field of data scie
nce has focused on automated methods of analyzing data such as machine lea
rning and new database techniques. However, the human aspects of data scie
nce, including how to maximize scientific creativity and human insight, ho
w to address ethical concerns, and the consideration of societal impacts,
are vital to the future of data science. Human-centered data science is a
necessary part of the success of 21st century discovery. I will discuss pr
omising research in this area, describe ongoing initiatives at the Univers
ity of Washington in Seattle, and speculate upon future directions for dat
 a science.
